Description
You think you are a good writer. You have the ideas that will make for a terrific short story or a non-fiction memoir piece or a novella or a novel. You know that you dream – both at night and during the day, with and without your eyes open – in visuals and images. You can ‘see’ your ideas translate into an amazing film. Or a play.
So, deep down you think – YOU KNOW – you are a good writer but you need help fleshing out your ideas and brushing up those rusty writing skills. Well, you are in the RIGHT PLACE.
My name is Roopa Swaminathan, AKA The Messy Optimist, and I’m a National Award-winning writer and filmmaker. I’m also an academic who teaches creative writing to college students (for over five years now). Also, I’ve taught Creative Writing to non-native English-speakers in Shanghai for many years. So, in case you’re worried about your grasp of the English language – I’m here to assure and reassure you – DO NOT WORRY. In all types and manners of creativity – all you need are ideas. The language skills can be worked on.
So…about this course:
This course (for new writers) will cover all of the basics of the creative writing process. My broad idea is to cover non-fiction writing with this basic writing class before we move on to the next level which will include both fiction and non-fiction writing. We will start with a lecture on an Introduction to Creative Writing, followed by lectures on the writing process. Then we will segue into writing creative introductions, body paragraphs and conclusions to your creative non-fiction essays. My hope for this class is that it will debunk the popular notion that people are ‘born writers’ and that writing cannot be ‘learned.’ Towards that end students will not just write different types of creative writing pieces but also hone their writing skills in various writing exercises that will help them become better writers.
This course contains pre-recorded video lectures for over Eight hours. Each lesson comes with writing exercises for you to practice your writing skills.
