Street Art Sunday – Hindu Temple Art, Colombo, Sri Lanka (1)
by The Messy Optimist
So – every Sunday – whichever part of the world I am – I’m going to get out images of raw street art that I find and post it here. It can be anything from paintings, chalk drawings on walls, graffiti, murals, photographs, weird store and restaurant names and logos, interesting and striking doors and walls and gates, interesting play on language – just about anything that is unique and artistic – by way of colors and language – I’m going to feature it here.
There are multiple Hindu temples in Colombo. Starting with this one at the heart of Colombo – this temple represents a significant population of Sri Lanka, the Tamils. Like I mentioned this is a south Indian temple in the heart of Colombo. The conical shape of the exterior is called a ‘gopuram’ in Tamil and is very representative of Tamil culture. The inside was as serene and calm and soothing as the outside was spectacular. The intricate carvings on the gopuram as well as the idols on the inside, the golden accents throughout the temple and the massive prayer space inside is a sight to behold. Enjoy!
